Birchbox July 2019 Review – Born Unicorn

Born Unicorn Birchbox July2019

Good Evening Bubbala’s,

We are almost half way through the week… 3 days left until the weekend 🙂 YAY

I got my July Birchbox today in a much more timely fashion than last month.

I find Birchbox great value for money and its really nice to get sample sizes sometimes instead of clogging up your beauty draw with products you might not get along with or just simply never use.

Birchbox is also great if you travel a lot. I travel quite a bit for work either for dinners or overnight stays, and having a small emergency make up bag or a travel bag is really handy especially if you’re like me and prefer to travel light.

This month was quite an eclectic mix of make-up / hair products and a little lifestyle. So I will drive straight in!

My Everyday Floss Eyeshadow – Shade Tokyo

1.) Floss. My Everyday Eyeshadow – Shade Tokyo

This is the only full size product we see in the Born Unicorn Edition. You could choose one of two shades – Tokyo or Champagne. Birchbox tends to give you a choice every month of which shade or colour of product you will get in your next Birchbox.

Personally I never opt in to choose anything, the point of Beauty Box Subscriptions for me, is to try new products I wouldn’t necessarily pick up in the shop.

The eyeshadow is highly pigmented and very reflective. It applies evenly and nicely, one of the few products I have experienced which applies very easily with your fingers. It gives a very natural and pretty finish – I think this is due to it being finally milled.

I am unsure of whether my product arrived broken or its supposed to be a mineral based pigment pot… If anyone has experience of this brand can you let me know in the comments below?

Probably the best thing about this product is that it is cruelty free and therefore guilt free.

Palmer’s Coconut Oil Moisturiser

2.) Palmer’s Coconut Oil 24 Hour Moisturiser

I’m going to make an assumption that most people are familiar with this brand as it is the number 1 cocoa butter brand in the world and won’t bang on about it too much.

Love Palmer’s products, excellent moisturiser …

I am not overly sure how I feel about getting it in a Birchbox, I like Beauty Boxes because it introduces me to products that aren’t mainstream or established. I like getting products that I have never heard any noise about or are a bit of a luxury item that I wouldn’t normally pick up because of a price tag and I am not sure if it is worth it.

Obviously I will happily use the moisturiser in any case.

Percy & Reed of London Frizz Fixer

3.) Percy & Reed of London Frizz Fixer

Now this is what I am talking about! A Frizz Fixer / Hair Spray that retails at £15.00 – Not something I can justify on a regular basis!

I swagged another Percy & Reed product in a Marks & Spencers Beauty Box last year and was really happy with it. That was a shine spray and worked an absolute treat.

I don’t really struggle to much with frizzy hair, but I do get a lot of flyaway hair and it never sits well tied up.

Literally instantly fixed! Just spray your hairbrush and glide through. Its not sticky nor does it stiffen the hair. It also smells nice too. I suppose when the creators are two of London’s best hairdressers you really can expect the best!

This Works – Deep Sleep Pillow Spray

4.) This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray

Another winner in my book!

The Beauty Box idea works again in regards to products I would never pick up in the shop due to price tag. I have received one of these in a Birchbox before but due to the full price value of the product – £18.00 and the quality, I don’t actually mind getting it again.

The spray basically does what it says on the tin, you spray it on your pillow and it helps you fall asleep and get a better nights sleep.

I am in love.

The spray is a combination of essential oils such as lavender, chamomile and patchouli. It has been clinically proven that it can help you fall asleep quicker as well as smelling gorgeous.

In one study, 89% of people fell asleep faster using this product and for once I am happy to be in the majority. I always pop this in my suitcase when I am staying overnight in a new place to help ease my nerves. – This is one of the few products I will use my Birchbox VIP 15% discount getting the fullsize product.

Marcelle Mascara

5.) Marcelle Xtension Plus Mascara

Marcelle is an award winning brand that is exclusive to Birchbox, which is great as it means whatever they put in the Birchbox I haven’t tried before.

I feel like every other month I get a mascara from Birchbox to try 🙂

I am still yet to find the perfect mascara… I am unsure if it exists or not.

The brush on this product is amazing, its very fine and curved which makes application a dream. It can coat every individual lash without clumping which for me is quite a feat.. I have not been blessed with luscious lashes… I swear fish have better eyelashes than me.

My only issue is that it does rub off a little though out the day. I have hooded eyes so often I get mascara on my lids which really does ruin a look. However it does take considerably longer to rub off.

As a general rule any Marcelle product I have ever had is pretty incredible.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

The July Birchbox is quite a pleasant surprise. It has met my expectation as whole for introducing me to new products that I would never pick up in the shop either because of price tag or its just not available in store and I wouldn’t have heard of it without Birchbox.

Once you have been with Birchbox for 6 months you get 15% discount on full size products. The only thing I don’t get excited about with Birchbox is the amount of Mascara’s you get in your boxes… However if you are a mascara lover it is great!

If you would like to see product applications or swatches etc please let me know in the comments below 🙂 Or if any of you lovely bunch know of an amazing Beauty Box or one you would like to know more about please let me know.

Until next time Bubbala’s ❤

A Small Introduction

Welcome to my blog and thank you for having a little look through on this page. A little about me, I am 26 years old and a UK based beauty, fashion and travel fanatic. I definitely have a penchant for the finer things in life…One problem.

I am broke.

Permanently.

It isn’t easy loving all these things on a pretty low wage…This blog is to explore, review and highlight a way of enjoying small luxuries…on a shoestring budget. I hope you will all come to enjoy my musings and hopefully save a few quid too!

Revolution Pro New Neutrals Pallet & Contour & Highlight Pallet – Review

New Neutrals

Happy Sunday Bubbala’s,

The weekend is almost over and it will be back to a full five days of work …beginning with the worst of all…Monday 😦

Nevertheless I have a dose of happiness with the Revolution Pro new release…New Neutrals. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will know this is the latest dupe for the new Huda pallet…and I love a dupe at a fraction of the price.

The pallet costs £12.00 and is stocked in most Superdrugs in the UK and on the Revolution website.

For £12.00 you get a bargain of 18 shades ❤ that is approximately £0.66 per shade. What a bargain. Within the pallet there are two super pigmented glitter shades , Party & Golden. These apply beautifully and wear well throughout the day…If you’re happy to wear a glitter in the day and why not live your best life.

There is one surprise textured cream colour, based which can be used as indicated for a base look which helps the glitter stay in place or create a cut crease.

I think this pallet is really well thought out, the shades all compliment each other and can achieve a huge variety of looks.

Shades 1 & 7 – Neutral and Calm need a lot of building. However these are the only shades I can find any real fault with and I will be mainly using them as a base wash over colour to solidify other shades.

The real gem of this pallet for me is the shade Magic. It literally is magical. Its a silvery / flecked gold shade that really catches the light. It doesn’t transfer even on my hooded eyes and it is pure and simple gorgeous. It needs very little building to create a striking look and it is so reflective.

I legit ran out of arm space for swatching…

I am not an amazing swatcher, so my apologies, however I did want to emphasise how pigmented these shades are., the two glitter shades, Party and Golden literally pack on the glitter, absolutely stunning.

The other shades are super blendable and all compliment each other. I do not understand how one pallet can be so good. 10/10 to Revolution Pro on the New Neutrals Pallet. I am one happy girl. Plus its cruelty free and guilt free ❤

Savanna Nights

If you have seen my IG you probably already know my thoughts on this product. This pallet is EVERYTHING. It is only £8.00. I adore this pallet. This is the darkest one in a range of three so if you are fairer skinned it might be worth picking up Sands of Time or Desert Sky. I really wanted all three but also need to eat until payday so I have prioritised my shopping list.

This pattern is to die for…

I will start with the contour shade. Trust me, you are not ready for how much product a contour brush picks up. I used my Revolution contour brush I got for Christmas and I was shocked by how pigmented this is. I normally find contour products take forever to build and forever to blend properly.

Not the case. I seriously advise a small brush and a light hand or you will be stuck blending for a while. The contour shade is very dark even with my fake tan on so less really is more unless you have the right skin tone for this shade.

It did take some quite fierce blending however I am prepared to admit I packed my brush. This shade is not for the fair skinned. However it is surprisingly quite a cool undertone which does work well for darker skin tones.

Now for the best bit… THE HIGHLIGHT THAT CAN CUT. If there is one thing that Revolution does well across the board it is these beautiful golden tones. I am obsessed with having golden skin. If I could be dripped in gold I would be.

This is no exception. The highlight is amazing. I am so happy it doesn’t apply super glittery. There are golden shimmers but it is not over powering. It reflects so well and creates a really subtle but powerful highlight.

All in all I am exceptionally excited to try the rest of the New Neutrals range. I am really eager to get my hands on some of the satin/ matte lipsticks in part of the same range. The packaging looks glorious and application is a beaut if IG shows me anything.

Definitely worth a purchase for your summer make up bag <3. Let me know if you have tried this pallet and what your thoughts are in the comments below. If you would like to see some looks holla.

Thanks for visiting and come again soon ❤

LookFantastic Beauty Box Review July 2019

“The Mind Is Like Water, When it is Calm, Everything Becomes Clear” – #lfbeautybox

Happy Sunday Bubbala’s! 🙂

Welcome to my blogs first official review – and my first ever Lookfantastic Beauty Box! What an exciting morning it has been.

For years and years I was a glossy follower. I absolutely adored getting my Glossy Box…until the usual started to happen which in this case happened to be product repeats and unfortunately I felt the quality of product that the subscription delivered had decreased

So I stopped my Glossy ways and did a lot of research into which box to try next and for all my research Lookfantastic came out on top. It is a little more expensive than a Glossy Box at £15.00 GBP per month, however this includes postage.

I ordered my box on a Thursday night, and it was on my doorstep by Saturday Morning. Very prompt delivery which I find extremely important. I have a love hate relationship with shopping online, love the shopping side of it, really resent paying for any form of delivery and then waiting for product to arrive!

The first thing that surprised me when I picked up my box was actually the weight of it, Glossy Boxes and Birch Boxes in my experience have always been quite light, however this box felt like it was brimming with full size products instead of sample sizes. An instant win.

The packaging this month is a light turquoise blue matching the boxes theme of hydrating products. The lid has a small quote captioned under the first photo which I thought was very cute.

Box Contents July 2019

First things first – I love the fact you get a Elle Magazine with your box. Who doesn’t love sitting with a face mask on and enjoying a flick through a magazine?!

As you can see all the products in this box are either full size or what I would call a “decent size” This box has a grand total cost of £71.00 worth of product… Not bad for a gal with the budget of £15.00…

I am rather happy with all the products in this months box bar 1. We can leave that until last though!

  1. Elemis Day Cream

The first product I am delighted with is the Elemis Day Cream. I adore the Elemis range, it is one of the few brands I can say I have never had a bad experience or been disappointed in.

The premise is simple as a day cream, apply in the morning on clean dry skin and let the magic happen. The first day I have used this I have without a doubt felt a difference in my facial moisture levels. I do struggle with dry skin around breakout areas and on my cheeks, this product felt very smooth on, definitely hydrating. It absorbs into the skin very quickly, and you can apply make up almost immediately. I found today that my make up has sat better today and hasn’t melted off in the summer heat. I even noticed the difference when I took my make – up of this evening.

This is the first time in my life where I have actually felt the need for a day cream, and appreciated the benefits. I have usually been very lucky in the respect of having youthful skin however I am starting to notice the fine signs of ageing – a few lines here and there, eyebags if I don’t get a good nights sleep etc. A good day and night cream have done the world of good.

2. Naobay Illuminating Micellar Water

I cannot even express how happy I am to have found this product in my first box. This one of the products I used to love getting in my Glossy Box in the early days. Naobay is a Spanish Company based in Valencia, Naobay standing for Natural And Organic, Beauty And You. The products are Vegan and Cruelty Free which means guilt free usage!

The Micellar Water is heavenly – I find with a lot of Micellar waters actually dry my skin out, even the oil based ones such as Garnier and Nivea. I have found them in the past to be very harsh on the skin.

The product has Green Tea, and Aloe Vera as well as raspberry, it smells like something you would drink – which to me is always a sign of a good product! (Wouldn’t advise it) I used the Micellar Water to remove my make up today and it was very effective and gentle on the skin. I didn’t feel any tightening sensation – which I normally do with these products and not in a pleasant way. My skin feels soft and I can actually say there is an illuminating quality… I wouldn’t go as far to say I had a glow, but there was definitely a feeling of brightness and cleanliness.

3. GLOV – Make-up Remover

This product is a total revelation to me. I have more make-up removing products than I care to admit, and they are usually a several step process. I don’t mind this when I am in the comfort of my own home but when I am on the go and in hotels I don’t appreciate the space it takes up in my suitcase or the worry of leaking.

It reminds me of a a fake tan mitt in shape just a lot smaller. It’s exceptionally soft to the touch but when you’re using it you can feel a gentle exfoliation effect. The product uses micro technology – I thought this was just for micro fibre dish clothes – and contains star shaped fibres that are thinner than that of cotton pads. This creates an effect that draws the make-up and bacteria out when you’re using it.

I really like this make up remover glove, its very travel size and effective and easy to clean after use. The one I had in my box is cream, I do slightly wish that I had a darker colour but it all does the same job! I will definitely be having this in my travel bag on my next excursion.

As an extra brownie point, the packaging is totally recyclable. 🙂 Green is the way forward.

4. VITAMASQUES Gold Eye Mask

What a dream. I am having a total moment with the mask beauty trend that we are enjoying at the moment. This company specialises in Korean Beauty and British Beauty combining the best of both worlds.

I am adoring the Korean Beauty scene. The products being brought to market are so innovative and unique and I am glad they are shaking things up. I have found a delightful mix of traditional beauty with modern technology know how.

The product has real Gold Extract and Hyaluronic Acid which helps decrease puffy tired eyes. I kind of feel like Hyaluronic Acid is all over the market at the moment. I know through research that this does have great effects for the skin, but I am seeing a lot of products making it their main selling point when the product has a very small percentage. I am unsure of how much of this substance you require to make a major impact in your beauty regime, but it does strike me as peculiar!

Nevertheless, the eye mask is super nice, I usually pick one a week up and on a Monday Morning treat myself with a coffee while I persuade myself to start the week on a positive footing.

The little pads are packed full of serum and my under eye just soaks it up. I read that the skin around your eye is the thinnest and most delicate on your body, and eye bags or purple colour below is bruising!

I do tend to struggle with my eyes, I sit at a computer all day so I end up squinting and I am a nightbird. The mask is a great treat and feels luxurious. I definitely feel and can see the benefits of this product. I would recommend to anyone who can make time in their morning routine for this.

5. EYEKO Fat Eye Stick – Shade Gilt

Let me preface by saying I have absolutely no experience of this brand. I received shade GILT which is a antique gold shade. The product is exceptionally pigmented, and applies very quickly with no dragging.

The shade is beautiful, however it needs to be set very well or it will move around as the day goes on. I have heavy eyelids and this is a regular challenge when I try very creamy products – as the day goes on it ends up in the crease of my eye.

6. Aromatherapy Associates Revive Body Gel

I feel very conflicted about this product. I love the packaging and smell of the product and after a little research I appreciate the philosophy of the company. It seems to me that the founders have combined aromatherapy and beauty for a pleasing experience.

The texture of this product is amazing, as a gel it feels cooling on application and dries very quickly. My skin was as promised soft and supple after use. The product claims to help with the reduction of fluid retention and the stimulation of circulation. I can’t see any evidence for these claims on my test of the product but I don’t suffer with these issues enough to look for it in my product selection.

What I found concerning about this product, was the safety warnings on the back of the product.

The product has a sensible cautions; “Not recommended during pregnancy. For adults only. If suffering from a medical condition seek advice from a doctor before use”

If any Lookfantastic subscribers are pregnant please note this is on the back of the product and not in the small beauty brochure provided. I find this concerning because I tried the product before reading the back. I also find any product that asks for a doctors advice a little off putting.

However this company may just be practising due diligence to protect its customers and its own liability.

That being said I did enjoy the product and found it to do what it says on the tin! My skin was very soft after without the greasy texture that a cream leaves behind.

Final Thoughts;

My final thoughts after my first subscription are very positive. This is without a doubt one of the best Beauty Boxes I have ever subscribed to in terms of value for money and product range. Its a really budget conscious way to try and get new high end products that you would normally not go near in the store.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
